We all know that feeling when a car gets too close, a horn blasts, the hair stands up on the back of your neck and you say a silent prayer to keep you safe.
Unfortunately, sometimes things turn bad, quickly and the worst case scenario plays out, a rider is killed or injured.
On May 19, 2010, at 7:00 PM, the Ride of Silence will begin in North America and roll across the globe. Cyclists will take to the roads in a silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways.

It's funny, when you talk to Heather Gollnick, she seems so calm, as if nothing out of the ordinary was happening this week, just another day.
An ordinary human might be freaking out over the fact that this week marks the beginning of her new race series Revolution 3, in Knoxville, Tennessee, with a $50,000 first place prize!
The average bear, might be losing sleep over the fact that this innovative new race series picks up where the Ironman leaves off by blending a world class series of event, with the latest in technology, family entertainment and a live web cast.
Most folks would be in a complete panic over the fact that pros. like Matt Reed are out to not only win this weekend, but at every Rev.3 event, marking this race series as the starting point in his quest to kick the crap out of all of his colleagues in every distance triathlon in his journey to be the first person to win the Olympics and then the Ironman. Yes, you heard that right Craig Alexander and Andy Potts, get ready for Big Matt.

Do you Remember Susan Boyle?
The English woman who appeared on Britain's Got Talent. When she walked out onto the stage, the audience and judges all began to giggle at her chubby, mono-brow awkwardness, until she began to sing.
When she sang everything changed. The unattractive, awkward woman that everyone was quick to judge as a loser was actually an amazing talent, with a great voice that made it to the finals and now has a #1 selling CD.

EXCUSE ME WHILE I JUMP UP ON MY SOAP BOX...AHEM!!!!!
Any time a corporation steps out to support endurance sports at any level, I think it is worth mentioning, TYR has taken sponsorship to a new level, giving the rest of the endurance brands an example of professionalism to shoot for.
Already a sponsor of World Chcmpion Chrissie Wellington, TYR has extended her sponsorship for the rest of her career and into her retirement. She is set!
In a sport where some "professionals," live at home, sleep on couches and make less than 10 thousand dollars a year, it's great to see TYR stepping up and giving the best what they deserve: peace of mind.
I once sat with Ironman Winner Chris Hauth in a coffee shop discussing the practicality of the sport. Hauth is an Olympian, a top 10 Kona finisher and Coeur d'Alene champion, however he also had to work as a web designer to make ends meet. "In the triathlon world, everyone knows who I am, at work, people have no idea, when I retire, most people in the rest of the world will never know where I have been or what I have done. That's the way it is in this sport."

This is your chance to win $300 and show of your creativity in the Crank The Earth- Design The Pace of Chicago Bike Jersey Contest.
To say I am flattered that the creative goddesses at Crank The Earth approached me about this contest is an understatement, they are an amazing local company with tons of positive energy in the endurance world.
If you're not familiar with Crank The Earth, here's your chance to learn more about the brain child of Michelle Hierzer and Sherry Keating, the founders. They don't make custom jerseys, they give artists the chance to make a custom work of art that turns into a jersey. The coolest part is not only do you get a chance to design the jersey, you get to vote on the winner and possibly win some cash! That's where you come in!
Be creative, have fun with it, when it's all over, your art could end up all over the world as well as the new banner for The Pace of Chicago! While I like the banner we have now, it does kind of look like Matt Suhey running on Oak Street Beach circa 1984. So ignore everything we have now (except the CN logo).

Just when you think it can't get any more ridiculous than Lindsey Lohan suing E-Trade, because they use the name "Lindsey" in one of their baby ad's, John Koroff has gone and made Lindsey look pretty good.
Koroff is the owner of the New York City Triathlon and has successfully sued the NYC Triathlon Club, forcing them to change their name.
A district court in Manhattan ruled Tuesday in favor of the New York City Triathlon, which was seeking an injunction against the NYC Triathlon Club, arguing that the club's name infringed on state and federal trademark laws.
"We have spent 10 years and thousands of hours making the New York City Triathlon a successful brand," said John Korff, the owner of the race. "When you have created a race of this size, you need to be ready to defend it."

HILO, HI (BRAIN)—World Triathlon Corporation (WTC), owners of the portfolio that includes Ironman, Ironman 70.3, Iron Girl and IronKids brands, has partnered with John Duke for the launch of a new tri magazine called Lava.
Duke spent 14 years as publisher of Triathlete Magazine and most recently was senior vice president of the Print Media Division for Competitor Group. He left the company at the beginning of January saying he wanted to pursue new opportunities.
“I could not imagine a better team to create the world’s leading triathlon publication,” Duke said. “Our team is excited to build a magazine for people who feel triathlon is not just a hobby, but rather a lifestyle. We are all looking forward to utilizing our first-hand racing experience, journalistic backgrounds and passion within the pages of Lava.”

I normally don't like to toot my own horn, at least not with the lights on. However, if you will indulge me for a minute, I have to share something pretty cool. Yesterday, I got hit with the big matzo ball of coolness and I wanted to share it.
Earlier this year I wrote a review about the cycling documentary Blood, Sweat and Gears, an inside look at team Garmin/Slipstream and their efforts to race clean on their journey to The Tour de France.
Today, the producers sent me the cover art for the DVD, and my review was quoted on the back cover! How kick ass is that!
I know I should be more cool about this, but I am pretty excited and extremely flattered. T-DOT isn't the largest triathlon site, or the sexiest, but to know that there are people out there reading and recognizing our efforts fills me full of warm fuzzies. Click here to read the original review and here to check out the DVD.
What a great way to start the year! Thank you to the producers, it's an amazing film and to be a part in any way is an honor.
We get reports from our editors with the numbers of readers per day. Some days there are thousands of you and some days there are dozens, but what matters is that you are there and you are reading. Thank you for reading and helping to spread the word.
And yes, get this DVD it really is worth watching. |

1. You have to!: If you want to gain fitness and race strong in 2010, you've gotta get the volume in... no matter what. Remember, while you're sleeping your competitor is outside riding somewhere on a tropical island.
2. It's safe: Ever heard of anyone getting hit by a car or having an angry motorist throw a bottle at you when down in the basement?
3. It's focused: Get that HR monitor on or that power meter fired up and 'train with a purpose'. Indoor training eliminates the variables of outdoor riding.
4. It's convenient: It takes 15 minutes to don your tights, booties, layer up with undergarments, balaclava and claw gloves but only 2 minutes to walk down the steps (or hallway) and hop on the trainer or treadmill.
5. You can do it anytime of the day or night: Short of getting lights for your bike, you can do trainer or treadmill work at any hour, before or after work.
